Japan's Reconstruction

By Yuichiro Haga

Japan's latest reconstruction effort will be set by Japan's parliament, creating a 4.02 trillion yen (more than $45 billion) emergency budget, which will lead the way in recovery efforts. Tsunami and earthquake-hit areas are dealing with the most expensive disaster in their history, and this emergency budget will cover only a small part of Japan's needs in infrastructure recovery. Additional recovery efforts are expected and will be analyzed by Japanese officials on a future date.

This emergency budget will target restoring damaged infrastructure, clearing rubble, providing temporary buildings to relocate homeless people and providing subsidies to private companies to help them with hiring efforts. Japanese government officials are expecting to create more than 150,000 jobs with this emergency budget.

The March 11 magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami caused an estimated $275 billion in damage, making it the most expensive disaster ever. The reconstruction of affected areas can take up to ten years in remote areas.
