A 3.8 billion project is being planned under the BART system. The BART system, Bay Area Rapid Transit is developing a 11.3 mile extension of the BART system from Dublin/Pleasanton east to Livermore. The program Environmental Impact Report has been completed, and now the agency is working to prepare a future Environmental Impact Report, that will be used to complete the engineering analysis on the proposed extension.
The proposed alignment will reduce to an 11 minute travel time between both areas and 79 new BART cars are expected to be added. The BART system alignment will extend easterly from the Dublin/Pleasanton station at grade within the median of I-580 to Portola Avenue. The proposed extension will allow BART to install tracks in the median of I-580 easterly as far as the funding will allow. However, the expected extension to Isabel Avenue might not be possible due to insufficient funding of the BART program.
BART is taking comments on the first phase concept through October 2011 and will be refining the project for inclusion in the draft Expenditure Plan.
BART program has been on the spotlight recently due to some issues regarding public demonstrators in the system. The BART system internet data service was shut down last week after BART employees got word that demonstrator were planning to protest inside the system vehicles.
