Leap Year: An Extra Day for NC Residential Code

This leap year provides an extra day for NC builders and contractors to be ready for the upcoming 2012 NC Residential Code. The NC Building Code Council will adopt and amend the NC State Building Codes as authorized by GS 143-138. Starting tomorrow the latest NC Building Codes will be:

• The 2011 NC Electrical Code is effective September 1, 2011
• September 1, 2011 Building, Fire, Fuel Gas, Mechanical, Plumbing
• January 1, 2012 Energy Conservation, Residential
• 1995 Existing Buildings (or 2009 NC Rehabilitation)
• 2008 Electrical (Legislative review on 2011 NC Electrical)

The following building codes will no longer be valid:

• 2009 Energy Conservation, Residential
• 2009 Building, Fire, Fuel Gas, Mechanical, Plumbing

In accordance with Session Law 2011-269, the mandatory enforcement date for the 2012 N.C. Residential Code is March 1, 2012. The 2012 North Carolina Residential Code is based on the 2009 International Residential Code.
