A $5.3 billion elevated rail system appears to on track and running smoothly. The 20 mile Honolulu transit project began in March on the rail's first phase that covers the alignment from Kapolei to Aloha stadium. The rail alignment extending from the island's west side to Honolulu should be completed by 2019.
The rail will be constructed using an elevated concrete structure varying between 35 to 60 feet high, will provide relief from traffic congestion along H1, Hawaii's only highway. The proposed rail line will also provide relief when gas prices rise; however, uncertainty covers the project due to its high cost and the inability of Hawaii to mitigate construction costs by hiking taxes on the population.
Honolulu's rail transit system runs from East Kapolei to Ala Moana Center, with 21 stations along the way, including Waipahu, Leeward Community College, Pearlridge, Aloha Stadium, the Airport, Kalihi, Downtown and Kakaako.
