The New York City Landmark Preservation Commission (LPC) has published a new manual aimed to help builders and homeowners to improve energy efficiency of historic rowhouses. The Manual, Greening New York City's Historic Buildings: Green Rowhouse Manual, encourages building build before 1940 to follow these guidelines in an attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions estimated to be near 75% of the city's emissions. The Manual is available for download for free on the LPC website.

These new regulations are part of the Plan NYC's Green Buildings and Energy Efficiency efforts that require buildings over 50,000 square feet to improve and monitor energy efficiency. The manual is divided into eleven sections that identify low to high cost energy efficiency upgrades. The manual contains the following sections:

  • Walls & Roofs
  • Windows & Doors
  • Heating & Cooling
  • Lighting & Electrical Wiring
  • Plumbing & Water Efficiency
  • Appliances & Plug Loads
  • Indoor Health, Housekeeping & Materials
  • Sustainable Site & Outdoor Amenities
  • Fuel Efficiency & Renewable Energy
  • Rating System (i.e. Energy Star, LEED, etc.)
  • Incentives & Programs
