Dubai is exploring the needs to implement a new wind code due to the high number of mega structures that are now being developed in the Middle East. The new wind code requirement, planned since 2009, will address specific wind patterns that could affect tower when wind passes at certain velocities. This new code that could be used to design tower such as Kingdom Tower, is based on European guidelines replacing the current British standards. Super tall structures that will be in compliance with this new code, will be the ones receiving building permits. Over the last decade, wind tunnel testing has become a regular model to measure response and behavior of structures with extreme wind pressure acting upon them. Current building standards do not cover the effect of wind on buildings above certain heights.
