A total of 24 projects, between new airports and improvement to existing facilities were approved by the National Development and Reform Commission. These new project are part of the Chinese government plant to build 82 new airports and expand more than 100 airports between now and 2015. The 24 new projects, with an approximate investment of $16 billion, will be run bu local governments, and obligated to pay operators for any losses. One important project being developed in Beijing is the Daxing airport, covering more than 9,000,000 square foot and providing a capacity of 80 million passengers. At that size, the $12.5 billion project would surpass both Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and London's Heathrow Airport to become the busiest aviation hub in the world.
