The UPT/Loyola Avenue Streetcar alignment will enter into service for the Super Bowl weekend. The new segment, mostly funded with TIGER Fund from the FTA, will connect to the Canal streetcar line carrying passengers near the Central Business District and the Superdome of New Orleans, just in time for the Super Bowl 47. The funds were used to construct 1.6 miles of track and specialized turn-out tracks at the UPT and at Canal Street and five state-of-the-art, solar-powered transit shelters that include video kiosks. The new street car line has already spurred more than $1 billion in commercial activity and new construction along Loyola Avenue. The RTA has also installed state-of-the-art shelters along the Loyola Avenue street carline. The agency finished up substantial construction work on Jan. 14 with a price tag of about $53 million.
