Definition: An acronym used in the contract competition process, RFP stands for "request for proposal." An RFP is one of several types of solicitations issued by a purchasing agency or parties who need work done; contractors competing for the contract will submit proposals outlining prices, timelines, etc. RFPs are used when contracts will be negotiated rather than bid.
