Definition: Building Codes and standards are the primary way in which construction is regulated in the United States to assure the health and safety of the general public. There are local, county and state permit laws to follow and/or enforce, so every locality has its own building codes, in addition to state and federal codes. Building codes are written mainly by volunteers, and codified by a variety of groups into books for distribution.
