Definition: The word zoning refers to regulations written by local governments that specify how a property can be used. Some examples of zones are:

single family- only homes intended to house one family are allowed
apartments- multiple family dwellings
commercial-stores and other businesses
industrial- factories and related uses

Some areas are zoned for multiple uses.
