List of general scaffold requirements in the construction industry. This list is for informational purposes only and might not be used as a standard. For more information, regulations and standard's visit OSHA's website.

  • Scaffold components must be able to support at least four times their maximum intended load.
  • The scaffolding platform should be fully planked, with no more than a 1-inch gap between planks and uprights.
  • The gap between the last plank and the uprights should be less than 9½ inches.
  • 18 inches is the minimum wide dimension allowed on platforms.
  • The scaffold should be 14 inches or less from the work face, or 18 inches for plastering and lathing.
  • 12 inches is the maximum extension permitted for planks beyond the frames.
  • Casters must be locked before work begins.
  • Platform surfaces should be secured.
  • The platform should be free from any object that may cause an accident.
  • Power lines must be at least 10 feet away from scaffolding, material and workers.
  • Different manufacturers of scaffolding components can be used, but they must fit together without force.
  • A defective scaffold must be removed from service immediately.
