Supported Scaffold Requirements

Supported Scaffold

By Ricardo Ricote
Supported scaffold requirements are another important area that needs to be cover by OSHA's standards. This is basic general information not intended to serve as regulation or reference standard.

  • Height to base ratio will be less than 4:1. If this cannot be met, then secure scaffold as follows:
    1. Support inner and outer legs.
    2. Every 20 feet, at least, vertical ties must be repeated on scaffolds that are 3 feet or less in width. If greater than 3 feet, then repeat every 26 feet.
    3. If height to base ratio is greater than 4:1, then restrained scaffold by guying, tying or bracing.
  • All scaffold frames and uprights should use base plates. If installed on dirt, use mud sills.
  • No settling is permitted in the footing and base plates.
  • Unstable objects should not be used as work platforms.
  • Riggers should be secured and installed correctly.
