The first layer should be about 3/8 inch and is commonly known as ‘scratch’ layer, because its surface is ‘scratched’ once it has been applied, to provide a proper bonding surface for the second layer. This first layer should be applied over a clean surface and over a damp masonry/block surface to prevent loss of bond and poor stucco quality.
